Synopsis:
Ms. Masai, one of the board members of the Bank of Japan (BOJ), will speak on Japan's economy and monetary policy from the viewpoint of the policymaker. The BOJ is said to be the standard bearer of unconventional monetary policy. What does that exactly mean? She will discuss the development of monetary policy in Japan and look at the details of "Quantitative and Qualitative Monetary Easing (QQE)," the framework the BOJ introduced in 2013 after Governor Kuroda took office. She will discuss the positive effects of the QQE and the challenges that lie ahead. She will also cover current conditions and Japan's economic outlook.

Biography:

Takako Masai is a member of the policy board of the Bank of Japan (present term of office is from June 30, 2016 to June 29, 2021). Ms. Masai served as an Executive Officer at Shinsei Bank, Ltd. from April 2013 to June 2016. She was the first woman to be appointed as a bank executives. She established the Financial Research Division at Shinsei Bank, Ltd. in 2016 and became the General Manager. She served as General Manager of the Markets Research Division in 2015, Head of Markets Research Department, Markets Sub-Group in 2013 at Shinsei Bank, Ltd. She joined Shinsei Bank, Ltd. as a General Manager in Capital Markets Division in May 2007. For 6 years she enhanced the marketing of the bank’s financial products. She also had a role in promoting the participation of women at Shinsei Bank, Ltd.

Prior to joining Shinsei Bank, Ltd., she worked for several foreign financial institutions in Tokyo including Credit Agricole CIB and The Toronto-Dominion Bank. During her career in the financial industry, she was deeply involved in financial markets, in particular the foreign exchange market. It was common for her to appear via media in the area. She holds a B.A. in English Literature from Jissen Women’s University and an MBA from Hosei University.
